One of the most anticipated events in Boston is the North End Feasts, which takes place every year during summertime. Known as an outdoor fiesta, this event draws in a large number of visitors and tourists from around the world. Much-loved among locals, this event brings together families and friends for an extravagant feast.
Paying homage to the revered saints from Italy, North End Feasts is celebrated among the Italian residents and immigrants in the area. However, locals from near and far gather at this festival each summer, making it much more than a religious occasion.
Located in the streets of the North End, this food fare is also known as the Feast of St. Anthony. Taking place on the last weekend of August, the conception of North End Feast began in 1919, after a group of Italians from Montefalcione migrated to the North End of Boston. Creating their own Italian community in the area, the group of Italians founded a society in honour of their patron saint, which they named in honour of St. Anthony. As it is widespread in Italy for each saint in the Catholic religion to have their own day, the Italians introduced North End Feasts to Boston in order to preserve their rich culture and long heritage in the Western Land as well as continue celebrating the special day as they did back home.
Today, this special event held in dedication to St. Anthony has become the “Feasts of all Feasts”, as described by the National Geographic. Similar to block party or a carnival, this food festival features a number of exciting activities and entertainment including live performances, shopping stalls, an exuberant parade and games for children.
The festival features a number of food stalls, serving an abundance of Italian dishes, ideal for those who love Italian cuisine. Travellers will able to savour the tantalizing flavours of Italian classics such as Sicilian pizza, calzones, baked ziti, and arancini. Lining the streets, these food stalls also serve fresh seafood and deserts, from shrimp, clams, oysters and calamari to pastries and homemade gelato. In addition, travellers will also be able to taste the succulent flavours of grilled meats, including hot sausage and teriyaki beef.
The procession at the North End Feasts provides the ideal atmosphere for those looking for a lively show. Various religious groups are seen treading along the neighbourhood streets collecting funds whilst the revellers enjoy live upbeat music. Visitors can also enjoy singing along to the live entertainment or partaking in a number of carnival type games at the festival.
